Why is it vital for Young Children to get into the habit of Reading Books?

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Theodor Seuss Geisel, American author, political cartoonist, and animator.

The importance of reading transcends beyond being a mere hobby to fueling the imagination of the reader and keeping the minds active and creative. It will not be an exaggeration to say that a book holds incomparable magic in itself, in the way it transcends the boundaries of countries, thoughts, imaginations, and beliefs. We, at Banyan Tree School, believe that though there is no right age to pick up the first book, the sooner we begin, the better it is for the children. All good habits must begin from an early age, and reading is no different.

Children are at a stage of their lives when they are still learning and exploring the world around them, and, introducing them to the habit of reading at this age tells them that there is more to the world than what they know at present. Here are a couple of reasons why we, at Banyan Tree School, believe it is important for young children to get into the habit of reading books:

Improves communication skills

Books are one of the finest ways of being acquainted with various words and styles of communication. It helps our children learn the grammar of any language and increase their depth of understanding to enable them to read more and learn more.

Enhances the ability to comprehend

Children who develop the habit of reading from a young age are good at comprehending and analyzing situations. We believe that the worldview that the children develop through their habits of reading makes them smart and mature enough to deal with all the circumstances.

A means of imparting knowledge

One of the foremost purposes of introducing children to books early on is to impart knowledge continually and effectively. When children gain more knowledge about a subject, it invokes their confidence and generates further interest in the subject.

An escape into the world of imagination

The imaginative and creative skills in children are as important as their practical know-how, and, books offer the perfect chance for them to escape into a world where the thoughts run free. The writer puts his/her thoughts into the paper, but it is up to the reader to visualize it all using his/her own prowess of thoughts and ideas.

Aids in building and developing the personality

Francois Mauriac, a French novelist, famously remarked, ‘Tell me what you read, and I’ll tell you who you are.” A good book unfolds your qualities as a person and enhances your social involvement, emotional development, and cultural awareness. It helps you discover your hidden thoughts and opinions and tap into your finest abilities.

A treat for the peace of your mind

In a schedule that is chock full of academics and co-curricular activities, books offer the much-needed breather to the young ones. Even if it is just one chapter a day, make sure that your child sits with that book from a young age, and you will be happy to see how quickly it becomes a habit that they do not want to let go.

We have always believed that learning is closely associated with reading, so much so, that enabling the former without ensuring the latter is too difficult to achieve. Thus, we, at Banyan Tree School, ranked as one of the Best Schools in Chandigarh, offer special emphasis on reading right from the junior level, and to that end, we have initiated the concept of bookbins in every class. The idea is to encourage our children to share the reading resources voluntarily amongst their friends. To add to that, we also have an extensive library at our premises, and our experienced group of teachers continually encourage our students to read and explore more. We hope our constant efforts and expansive resources will enable our students to become avid readers, keen explorers, and quick learners.
